From Quirky to Quintessential: 3 Alabama Gulf Coast Icons

When you’re in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, you’re in a family-friendly paradise. Unlike some beach towns, the Alabama Gulf Coast is a beyond-the-neon kind of place. It’s combination simple and fun-filled. Our days are about kid-friendly fun, waterfront views, live music, good food, and cold cocktails. Nothing disappoints here, especially these three iconic spots.

Pirate’s Cove

It may disappoint the little ones that Pirate’s Cove isn’t literally a place where playful pirates gather (they have that at Disney).  This is a place where low-key laidback people gather.  Many locals would claim it as one of their favorite spots on the Gulf Coast.  It’s a perfect place for a burger and a beverage.  Boats come and go; dogs lounge on the deck while kids play in sand and splash in the water.  You’ll find it located toward the end of Highway 95 if you’re headed there by car (although, many come by boat).

Lucy Buffett’s LuLu’s

Lucy Buffett’s LuLu’s is all about crazy fun. That’s their motto, and we definitely agree. LuLu’s is undoubtedly family-friendly, and they provide plenty of opportunities for fun. There’s shopping, an arcade, a three-story climbing ropes course (The Mountain of Youth), and a little ropes course (Munchkin Mountain), plus a beach for the kids. The food (which is also kid-friendly), the cocktails and the live music nightly, rival the glorious waterfront view. Something is being celebrated at LuLu’s all year long, so check for fun events like BooLu’s, Billy Claus, a Mardi Gras Ball, and more!

Flora-Bama Lounge and Oyster Bar

Flora-Bama Lounge and Oyster Bar located on Perdido Key Drive (and technically a Florida establishment) derives half of its name from the fact that it’s partially located in Alabama.

Flora-Bama is one of those oddities that simply must be seen in person. They’re best known for their amazing bands and even more amazing bushwackers (or did we get that reversed?).  Despite the word “lounge” in their name, during the day, they’re totally kid-friendly, and on any given day –especially on summer weekends—there’s a chance of some kind of event whether it be a chili cook-off, mullet-tossing competition, or a Thanksgiving feast. It’s the pinnacle of kicking back, taking it easy, and appreciating the simple things in life, which is what being at the beach is all about.
